DJ, producer and electronic music influencer Sara Simms calls upon her inner rock chic as she combines her love of alternative rock and techno in this cover of Nirvanas ‘Heart Shaped Box’. Working together with producer Graham Miller, the Toronto based pair have been able to construct a more traditional rock arrangement using live instrumentation whilst remaining true to her electronic roots.

Premiered on Valentines day this week, the official music video, skillfully directed by Katherine Kwan) is an homage to the grunge pioneers and finds Simms and her band (featuring Melle Oh and Erica EGR Balon) loading into the Rivoli venue in Toronto and performing to a crowd of randy concertgoers beneath a sea of fog. The visuals also take inspiration from scenes in Nirvana’s original videos for ‘Smells Like Teen Spirit’ and ‘Heart-Shaped Box’.

Best known for her turntablism and scratching skills, Sara’s flare on the decks have been turning heads across the globe for several years now. She has shared stages with DMC World Champion DJ QBert, was on the judging panel at the Canadian DMC Championships and has worked closely with music tech brands such as Fender, Roland, Pioneer DJ, Moog and more throughout her career. Other highlights include sets at Ultra Music Festival in Miami, World Pride Toronto, Virgin Music Festival in Toronto, a performance at AIR Tokyo and opening for Friendly Fires in Cannes, France.

‘Heart Shaped Box’ is out now on all digital platforms including Spotify, Beatport and iTunes.
